5 Popular Vintage Hat Styles Suitable for Everyday Wear

There are so many different styles of hats out there, and some of them are truly vintage. Here are 5 of our favourite hat styles, all of which are available in our shop of course.

1. The Baker Boy cap

Also known as a Newsboy cap, Gatsby cap, Bandit cap, Cabbie and Apple cap, these eight-panel caps have grown in popularity recently partly due to the series Peaky Blinders. With so many different tweeds, fabrics and styles to choose from this is a versatile casual style for both men and women.

This style was popular in both Europe and North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but is most associated with the 1910's and 1920's.
Baker Boy caps normally feature a stiff peak with a round, sometimes puffy, crown made from 8 panels with a button on the top. There is also often a popper button attaching the front to the brim.

2. Flat Cap

Like the Baker Boy caps, traditional flat caps are also making a resurgence with the younger generation recently. Again with so many different cuts and fabrics to choose from, these caps are great to wear all year round.

The flat cap can be traced as far back as the 14th century in Northern England and is an iconic British hat. Flat caps are available in woollen tweeds as well as finer fabrics such as linen for the summer. They work just as well as an addition to an outfit for a night on the town as they do for for country walks!

3. The Cloche

Invented in the early 1900's in Paris, cloche hats were especially popular in the 1920's. The name is derived from the French word for bell and refers to the bell shape of the hat. These hats are normally made from wool felt, although summer versions can be made from straw. In recent years Art Deco fashion has become more popular again, especially with programs such as Downton Abbey.

This hat is perfect for everyday Autumn or Spring wear, but is also smart enough and unique enough to wear as a formal hat to a winter wedding or special occasion. Our in-house milliners Adrienne Henry Millinery make beautiful one-off cloches.

4. The Fedora

The Fedora has been around since the late 19th Century and was most popular from the 1920's to the 1950's. It is a classic style men's hat and is widely associated with gangsters and prohibition. Made from wool felt, this is a blocked hat with a wide down-turned brim and a creased crown.

Available in lots of different colours, and with or without a snap brim, this is now a great unisex style which, although being smart, is an easy to wear everyday style.

5. The Pork Pie Hat

Another blocked wool felt hat, the pork pie usually has a round crown and brim. The style is often attributed to the actor Buster Keaton in the 1920's who wore them in his films, but they were also very popular in the 1930's and 40's. It is now most commonly linked to musicians, in particular Ska and Jazz musicians. This is a fun style of hat which is sure to make you stand out from the crowd.

The pork pie is also a popular choice for summer hats.
